HAY vs. Muuto: Which Danish Brand Is Right for You?
HAY and Muuto are the two dominant forces in accessible Danish design. Both are excellent. Both are expensive enough to require a decision. Here's how to choose — and how to mix them when you don't have to.

The two pillars of Danish design today
In the early 2000s, Danish furniture design had a problem. The great mid-century brands — Fritz Hansen, Carl Hansen, PP Møbler — were producing masterpieces, but at prices that made them inaccessible to most people. There was a gap between IKEA and the design classics, and almost nothing filled it well.
HAY and Muuto both launched in the mid-2000s to fill exactly that gap, and both have been extraordinarily successful. But they've taken meaningfully different approaches. Understanding those differences will tell you which one belongs in your home.
Design philosophy: HAY's playful democratism
HAY, founded by Rolf and Mette Hay in Aarhus in 2002, is fundamentally optimistic and populist. They believe — as the original Danish welfare-state designers did — that good design should be for everyone. Their range spans a huge price span, from €5 accessories to €5,000 sofas, and they approach colour with more confidence than almost any other Scandinavian brand.
HAY's signature move is the colourway. The About A Chair, the Mags Sofa, the Copenhague table — all come in such a wide range of colours and finishes that choosing becomes part of the pleasure. The brand has a warmth and a lightness that makes it feel approachable even when the prices are significant.
HAY's design heroes: the About A Chair family (Hee Welling), the Copenhague table series (Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec), the Mags Sofa, the PC Portable lamp (Pierre Charpin).
Design philosophy: Muuto's quiet precision
Muuto, launched in Copenhagen in 2006, is more architectural, more restrained, and positions itself at a slightly higher price point than HAY. The brand name means 'new perspective' in Finnish — the idea that the Nordic design tradition still has more to say, if approached with fresh eyes.
Where HAY leans into colour and accessibility, Muuto leans into form and craftsmanship. The Outline Sofa's wrapped upholstery technique, the Base Table's cast base, the Stacked Shelving System's modular precision — all of these are products where the thinking is in the making. The palette is more restrained: soft greys, warm blues, forest greens. Nothing too saturated, nothing too shouting.
Muuto's design heroes: the Outline Sofa (Anderssen & Voll), the Fiber Chair (Iskos-Berlin), the Stacked Shelving System (Julien De Smedt), the E27 Pendant (Mattias Ståhlbom).
Price comparison
Both brands operate in a similar price territory for comparable categories, but Muuto consistently prices at a premium:
Dining chairs: HAY About A Chair AAC22 — €369. Muuto Fiber Side Chair — €459. Difference: €90 (24%).
Sofas: HAY Mags Soft 2.5-seater — from €3,640. Muuto Outline Sofa 3-seater — from €4,650. Difference: approximately €1,000.
Pendant lamps: HAY Arcs Mirror pendant — €259. Muuto E27 — €195. Here HAY is actually more expensive for a basic pendant.
In practice, the price difference is meaningful but rarely decisive — if you're already spending €3,000+ on a sofa, the extra €1,000 for the Muuto is often worth considering. Where it becomes a clearer decision is in the smaller purchases: chairs, side tables, lamps. At that scale, the HAY range offers more flexibility.
How to mix both brands in one room
The good news is that HAY and Muuto mix extremely well. They share enough DNA — Danish sensibility, clean lines, quality materials — that pieces from both sit together naturally.
A strong approach: anchor the large pieces (sofa, dining table) in Muuto, where the extra investment in precision is most visible. Complement with HAY for chairs, lamps, accessories, and textiles — where HAY's breadth of colour and lower price points make them ideal for adding personality and variety.
The reverse also works: a HAY Mags Sofa as the hero piece, surrounded by a Muuto Stacked shelving system, a Muuto E27 pendant, and a Muuto Base coffee table. The contrast in philosophy — HAY's warmth against Muuto's precision — actually creates more interest than using either brand alone.
