Industrial design was discovered by artists who looked at decommissioned factories and saw revelation, not ruin. Exposed brick, raw concrete, visible ductwork, Crittal steel window frames, reclaimed timber floors worn to silver: the aesthetic celebrates the honesty of structure and the beauty of material that has not been concealed. In its mature form it balances the utilitarian with the carefully chosen — a single beautifully aged leather sofa in a vast poured-concrete room, one pendant light hanging from an exposed beam, the negative space doing as much work as the objects. Urban, unsentimental, and oddly romantic.
